Fun for the kids in the gloomy weather

Keep your wellingtons and raincoats away with these indoor playspaces.

The monsoon season in Singapore is upon us, with unforgiving rains and unpredictable waves of heat. It certainly puts a damper on the end-of-the-year holiday fun but fret not, because tucked away in the concrete jungle is a bunch of playspaces you can bring your kids to.

Interactive Playspaces.

Future World at the ArtScience Museum. The exhibit is divided into 4 sections – Nature, Town, Park and Space. It is highly interactive, where your little one can draw a building or a car and watch it come to life on a screen. Take part in augmented realities where he or she can interact with projected images or build blocks and throw balls that change colors when you interact with them.

Playeum, the Children’s Centre for Creativity is housed in Gillman Barracks, an ex-military reworked into a cluster for the arts. It is a charity with a strong vision for learning and creativity. Playeum helps your child learn through exploring, expressing themselves and using their senses to interact with the world around them. Their ideology is scientific, with a specific and well-thought out pedagogy (methodology of teaching). They are Reggio Emilia-inspired, meaning that children learn through expressions, social interaction and have some control over their own learning.

Here’s an interesting reason why you should take your kids to Playeum: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZ5DfuNJ8Qo

Their classic blue odd-shaped building blocks will encourage creative problem solving skills from the kids. There are many other things for the children to do here, like making arts and crafts and destroying the blocks they built. Kaboodle also comes with a cafe for parents to sit back and take a well deserved break.

Simulation Cities.

KidZania is an attraction nestled in the beaches of Sentosa, but it’s a city within the island. It’s a roleplaying playspace where your kids emulate real life, complete with jobs and a salary. There are countless amounts of careers to choose from and facilities to match. Your kid can be a doctor, a museum curator, a photographer, and even a firefighter. Kids will earn kidZos, KidZania’s very own currency which they have complete independence over – to purchase goods and services or save it in a bank account. There are ATMs and iKiosks throughout the city of KidZania for the children to utilise. The learning opportunities here are endless – from learning the inner dwellings of different career paths to grasping the concept of managing money.
